Planning a family outing and not sure which type of park is right for you? You’re not alone. Water parks, theme parks, and adventure parks each offer something different and knowing the distinction can make all the difference in how your day goes.
The three types of parks
The Water Park
A traditional water park is built almost entirely around aquatic attractions — slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, and splash pads. Think of it as the classic indiana water park experience: you show up in a swimsuit, you get wet, you go home happy. These parks are fantastic for hot summer days when beating the heat is the whole point.
The Theme Park
Theme parks are large-scale entertainment destinations built around a central concept or IP — think roller coasters, character meet-and-greets, and elaborate themed lands. They’re designed for full-day (or multi-day) immersive experiences, typically with higher price points and longer travel distances. Great for a big trip, but not always the right call for a spontaneous weekend outing.
The Adventure Park (This is SKYLAKE)
An adventure park blends the best of both worlds — water fun, outdoor activities, and hands-on experiences all in one place. Rather than specializing in just one type of attraction, adventure parks are designed to keep every member of the family engaged, regardless of age or interest. It’s the indiana beach atmosphere families love, combined with the variety and energy of a full outdoor destination.
SKYLAKE is Indiana’s premier outdoor adventure park, and that distinction matters. We’re not just an outdoor water park where you show up, ride a slide, and leave. We’re a full-day destination built around the idea that the best family memories happen when you’re active, outside, and doing something together.
Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, there’s always something new to try and always a reason to stay a little longer than you planned.
